Declan Patton, PhD is a biomechanical engineer with a focus on impact injury. As a Senior Research Scientist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Center for Injury Research and Prevention, Dr. Patton uses accelerometer-based sensor systems to investigate head impacts in youth sport as part of a larger project, which aims to advance pediatric concussion assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

In 2008, Dr. Patton received his BSc in Physics and BE(Hon) in Aerospace from the University of New South Wales, Australia. His engineering honors project investigated the impact attenuation potential of novel material combinations in motorcycle helmets using finite element (FE) analysis. After gaining an interest in impact biomechanics, Dr. Patton commenced his doctoral studies under the supervision of Dr. Andrew McIntosh investigating unhelmeted head impacts in Australian football and rugby league using video analysis, rigid body reconstructions and finite element (FE) simulations. The latter used the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) FE human head model and Dr. Patton spent a year under the supervision of Dr. Svein Kleiven at KTH, Sweden. Contemporaneously to his doctoral studies, He was a research associate at Transport and Road Safety Research on the Quad Bike Performance Project and the Safe Cycle Study. In addition, Dr. Patton investigated the development, grading and injury rates of rugby union players as a research associate at the Australian Rugby Union.

Dr. Patton received his PhD in 2014 and was appointed as an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Research into Injury in Sport and its Prevention, which is part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Research Network. As a Post-Doctoral Fellow, he investigated head injury and helmet performance in recreational snow sports at the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre, Norway, and youth ice hockey at the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre, Canada, which are also part of the IOC Medical Research Network.
