Injuries to children in the rear row have been reported due to the rearward intrusion of occupied front row seats. This project builds on prior CChIPS research to investigate front row seatback stiffness, deformation, and rotation to adequately absorb crash energy for front row occupants while also preventing excessive rearward rotation into the rear row space. The finite element environment developed for Year 1 of this effort will be modified to include a wider variety of conditions, especially focusing on seatback rotation, seat foam and frame properties.
This project is currently underway. Further information will be added in late 2022 following project completion.
